Boy Killed By Float In Portsmouth Parade - WMUR.com, Manchester, NH

When this story was first reported last Saturday evening, the parade in question was a Christmas Parade. As the days passed, and the investigation wore on, the parade became a “holiday” parade.

Hmmm. I guess the Christmas Parade didn’t want its image tarnished by a 9-year-old killed during a traditional celebration. Suddenly, it’s OK to be wished Happy Holidays.

Tell that to the kid’s parents.

There seem to be a lot of problems with these parades, the two mentioned in that story and those we have down here. They need more structure, but that isn’t going to happen for the same reason the beach wasn’t closed in Jaws, the “city fathers” don’t want the town to be portrayed negatively.

Before long he have died in a parade with no association to anything, only because they probably can’t get it reported as simply a motor vehicle accident.

The boys were riding on an open flatbed trailer towed by a pickup truck. Get a bunch of 9-year-old boys on a trailer in an exciting situation like a parade, and there’s bound to be some rowdiness. What are people thinking, letting their kids ride like that? In Milford’s parades, children either ride on a trailer with sides (no feet dangling over the sides) — or they walk.

I do believe that in this evening’s news report, the incident was further demoted to “parade accident” without mention of the event the parade was supposed to be celebrating. By tomorrow, it will have been forgotten all together, unless it turns out that the boy was pushed off the float by one of his troop-mates.

Well, it’s better than the parade in the Carolinas where they arrested one of the float drivers for DUI, kidnapping, and blowing a red light after he apparently forgot about the float he was towing and pulled out of line sped down Main Street with about 14 people on the float hanging on for dear life as the police chase ensued.
